This 3D model of a wooden skyscaper was build to illustrate an article about wood, an emerging construction material for tall buildings. Is was published in a special issue of the magazine Süddeutsche Zeitung Langstrecke.
The task for this illustration was to replace the interior of an existing car photo with a new interior that illustrates “Autonomous Driving”. To illustrate the combination of 3D models and photographic elements I’ve made a short animation. The photos I used were provided by the editorial department.
An infographic to present the newly opened cable car to the Zugspitze and related informations. It was created for the ADAC Motorwelt magazine. I created everything except the texts. They were written by the editorial department.
A wraparound cover I’ve made for the german edition of “Stormglass: Tesla Threat” by the author Andy Deemer. It’s the second book of the Stormglass series and is about a mysterious machine build by Nikola Tesla. The lettering was done again by the publisher.
This variation of the Soyuz spaceship was designed to be compatible with the Buran space shuttle. In a case of emergency on board Buran, the Soyuz spaceship would dock to the Buran orbiter and evacuate the crew.
A wraparound cover I’ve made for the german edition of “The Stormglass Protocol” by the authors Tim Pratt and Andy Deemer. The book is about an artificial species of (very aggressive) honey bees. The final lettering was done by the publisher and I think it fits very well.
This is how the illustration looks, before the lettering was added.
Here is a quick realtime animation of the bee model. The movement of the wings isn’t supposed to be realistic, its intention is to add a bit motion blur to the tips. The greatest amount of work went into this 3D model of the bee. In its case I tried to be as accurate as possible (in a naturalistic way), while staying close to the descriptions in the book.
A Formula One car and some components I’ve made for a “Die Zeit”-infographic. The illustrations show the 2015 version of the car and the parts that were changed or improved for this season.
The four components are: Hybrid engine, air intake, front wing and the multifunctional steering wheel. It took 9 days to build the models.
A quite complex 3D model of the Norwegian Getaway. I build it for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. I also had to cut several parts open to show the bridge, luxury cabins, normal cabins, crew cabins, restaurants, medical center, waste disposal and laundry. The rooms are not very accurate since there are very few technical information about the ship. But their position in the ship is correct.
An accurate 3D-Model of the Soviet space shuttle “Buran”. The model was created in cooperation with Vadim Lukashevich for the Buran.ru project.
The real Buran project was cancelled before the completion of the spacecraft. The only remains of the project are incomplete prototypes and mock-ups. My task for this 3D model was to create a completed and fully fitted version of the Buran shuttle, based on original plans.
The outside of Buran is relatively well documented, and I could rely on original plans and photos. Reference material on the design of the interior (like the payload bay and the modules) was very limited. In order to create a convincing model, I put a lot of effort into the design of this areas.
I’ve built the model as detailed as I could. My goal was to create a model, that works in long shots and extreme close-ups.
In addition to the spacecraft, I also build two modules that were designed for Buran. The grey module is the docking module. The spherical part is connected to the main cabin and contains the airlock. The cylindrical part contains an extendable tunnel and is equipped with an APAS docking system at the top.
The cylindrical module located in the middle of the cargo hold was a prototype for future modules. The module was also equipped with scientific instruments for the test flights of Buran.
Another important part of the model is the landing gear. The construction of the gear was quite difficult because I had no information on the exact dimensions of its components. I had to find the correct proportions visually, with photos as reference.
A large map of the Frankfurt University. It shows the four main sites and the departments of the university. I made this for a special issue of Die Zeit.
I build the models mainly on basis of Google Maps and the aerial view of Bing Maps. The buildings are quite simple, mainly blocks. But I still needed two weeks put all together.
The time window for completing the illustrations was quite narrow, so I’ve exported the hand model from the open source character tool MakeHuman. The program is very helpful for simple base meshes, but the anatomy of the hand needed some tweaking for more realism. Thankfully the exported mesh contained a usable rig. I only had to make the UV-maps, nails and the textures.
Two variations of a low energy house. The left one was made for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and the right one for the Süddeutsche Zeitung some months later. The illustrations show how to improve the energy-efficiency of old buildings.
The idea for the illustration and the background photo were provided by the client. So I only had to build and arrange the 3D-models. The most complex part was the plane.
The money itself is only made of plains and cylinders that were scattered along a spline. The textures were a bit tricky since newer Photoshop versions refuse to open scanned banknotes. I had to used the good old Photoshop 7 to edit the textures.
Some illustrations I’ve made for a special issue of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. The issue was dedicated to Natural Gas.
The side view at the top is a part of an infographic about the differences between conventional gas production and fracking. The six low poly illustrations show several new technologies that are related to natural gas.
A large infographic for the Swiss newspaper “Schweiz am Sonntag”. The task was to illustrate some statistical data about the Swiss. For example the cities with the highest percentage of immigrants or the highest population density.
